Jason watched the young man sleep, the man who had come to him today and all but demanded that he teach him. He was different from others, he had seen that as soon as he had first laid eyes upon him, felt the Demon reaching forward in interest. He had pushed him back, but could feel him regarding the young man - just as he was.

Yes, he was different. But then he always had been. Jason remembered the first time he had seen him, bright armour glimmering in the early morning sunlight, clearly exhausted as he had returned from some noble deed. His squires had been at his side, one a knight himself but staying at his mentor's side nonetheless. Jason remembered standing atop the castle walls on guard duty, watching them riding through the streets of Camelot, seeing the joy lighting up the city as the people realized that Lancelot had returned. Perhaps that was when he fell in love with him, seeing him then, wearily accepting the wishes from the people. He knew the effect he was having, didn't care for it, but went through the motions anyway.

He remembered seeing him again, the night of his return. He was sitting in the great hall, at the top table at the feast being held in honor of his return, sitting at the right hand of the king. Everyone's eyes had been on him, staring at him in adoration, the king's eyes among them, gleaming in the light of the fires. Jason had seen, known somehow, that he would have preferred to be anywhere else but there, away from the responsibly of being the best and noblest knight in the lands. Was he not renowned for going in disguise, for abandoning his name at times to be a nameless knight errant? Surely this hall, full to overfilling with people, was the last place he would wish to be.

Jason had seen the look that Lancelot and the king had shared, only for a moment, but enough for him to know. He had felt his heart break only hours after it had been beating fiercely with joy. He had known that he had no chance, that everyone was in love with Lancelot, but it hadn't stopped him from hoping anyway. But there was only one he would ever love.

Then Camelot had fallen, out of jealousy and envy and scorn. Jason remembered the last battle, and seeing Lancelot return too late to prevent the evil from happening. He was one of the few to live, mortally wounded himself yet still looking for his love. Jason remembered the look on his face when he did, and his stubborn refusal to not disobey the king's last request. Lancelot had taken the sword and given it back to the Lake, then returned to the king's side.

Jason had watched them die in the same moment.

Jason sighed, his thoughts returning to the here and now. Yes. This man before him was too young to be the knight he had known, but it was, unmistakably, him.

The Demon was reaching forward, eager to see what havoc it could wreak upon him, but Jason pushed him back once more, forcefully. He could feel the Demon considering then, could feel his insistence that the Demon was not going to taint this one.

The man - Bruce - moved slightly, for a moment looking exactly like Lancelot. Jason wondered when Arthur would show up, for surely he wouldn't have let his knight go far without him. Jason turned to look at the fire. Yes. Training this young man was going to be... very interesting, indeed. And maybe, maybe this time, he would have him before Arthur returned.

Jason smiled.

Excellent, Star!

Is the knight staying by Lancelot's side Dick?

Oh, Jason, you love Bruce well, but the noble, shining Arthur will return and claim him again. :)

Yep, the knight who stays at Bruce's side is Dick; Bruce's squire is Tim. :p

Oh, Jason, you love Bruce well, but the noble, shining Arthur will return and claim him again. :)

LOL, I think you might just be right... ;)

Yay, what a lovely fic! Jason's reminiscing was so touching and bittersweet:

He had known that he had no chance, that everyone was in love with Lancelot, but it hadn't stopped him from hoping anyway.

Eep. *wibble* How sad for Jason. :( And I loved the descriptions of Lancelot's personality, how he cared so little for the attention being heaped on him:

He knew the effect he was having, didn't care for it, but went through the motions anyway.

And then he died with Arthur. ;.;

And I loved Bruce's connection with all of this, how it was exactly like Jason was meeting this man from his past, only not. Bravo!

*huggles Jason* Not fun being in love the person every one else is! *pets Lancelot* I figured he wouldn't like crowds very much...

He's going to find his training with Jason interesting, that's for sure! :p

Thank you for commenting, Christine! I'm really glad you liked this. :D

Weeeee!! Star, thank you! Jason! Jason, oh dear, so wistful, and with just the right twist of mischief! This is wonderful!

I love Jason's silent and distant love for Lancelot, and the way you portray Lancelot himself -to be honest, I could really use reading more about Arthurian legend, I'm rather under-read there!- concerned to little about the adoration of the masses because what he wanted was to help, not be worshiped. And the love he shares with Arthur, to die by his side, never giving Jason a chance to even name his love D:

And I love love *love* the way Bruce represents an opportunity to reclaim that past... it's probably doomed, since, well, it's Jason, and it's Bruce, and those two.. *shakes head* but I'm sure it will make things better for both to have each other, for as long as they can.

And maybe, maybe this time, he would have him before Arthur returned.

Jason smiled.

I can see his smile, a little cruel but not.. in a bad way. Does that make sense? Very Jason, in any case! I love this! Thank you so much, dear! for this, and for the other present, it has made me incredibly joyful all day! IT'S SO PRETTY!! you crazy Star, you didn't say anything, lol! I had no idea what it was or who it was from when I got it from the mailbox XD Thank you, dear. You're the best <3 I need to write you to properly squeal about it, lol, but.. man. Thanks :)

*huggles Jason and pets Lancelot* It's not easy to be in love with the person everyone else is! And of course Lancelot died at Arthur's side - I don't care what the myths say! :p

*grins* I'm sure Jason will use the opportunity to his advantage... ;) *pets them*

Whoa. O_O

I *love* the reincarnation/cyclical theme here, that it's all happened before and will happen again. Bruce as Lancelot? Brilliant!

Bravo!!

LOL, it's a game I like to play: Arthur=Clark, Lancelot=Bruce and Guinevere=Diana. :p I have hopes of one day writing it properly...

Yay for Jason! I find him terribly difficult to write, so I like how you captured his ambiguity and struggle--the Demon really feels like a true part of himself, a side he represses (which is what Etrigan always is a metaphor for, right?) You do a great job with him here...

I'm really glad you like him, Jen! You make him sound a bit like Harvey, which I suppose he is, with the two very different personalities in one body. *wonders why she never made the connection before*

*glomps* Thank you again for all the help and encouragement! And thank you for commenting, too! :D

OOOH!!!

Jason, you are naughty in your thinking...or maybe that's my eternal shippiness of you and Bruce.

Do love the paralleling to the Arthurian tales.

So even though he is alien Clark is probably Arthur's spirit returned?

I like Bruce as the Lancelot for this generation. That's how I see Bruce being immortal. He may die in one form but come again in another.

On that note Jason will probably always get to train him. Clark to love him.

I immediately saw Dick and Tim as his knight squire companions. Lancelet is all of Bruce qualities without the rage and paranoia. I think Bruce will always be some iconic figure no matter when/ where his spirit resides.

Great story!

LOL, yeah. I'm... not sure how that would work, exactly... :p

Mmmm, I really like the idea of Bruce being an old soul, of him being reincarnated. As long as he gets some rest between being alive, lol.

I couldn't not have Dick and Tim in this! They demanded that they be by Bruce's side, and who am I to deny them? :p

Thank you for commenting! I'm very glad you liked it. :)
